有次在裝修辦公室時，Herman Miller 設計總監 George Nelson 打算採購幾件瑞典吊燈，吊燈外殼是由極難製作的彈力絲綢所覆蓋，雖然美的發泡，卻礙於價格高得離譜，可望不可及。於是聰明伶俐的 Nelson 創作魂大爆發，短時間內便搜集了相關資訊，初代 Nelson Lamp 就在這樣的背景之下誕生。Nelson 用穿孔的鐵環插入輕鋼絲打造輪廓，如此的結構體能不受張力影響依舊保持形狀，而且不需太多的工具，更無焊接成本。接著，於此結構外層噴上樹脂漆，形成纖維網，再製作一層半透明的光滑外皮，完成！

憑藉高效的製作流程，Nelson 將一個昂貴的想法落實為一個簡單優美、經濟實惠、可批量生產的設計而持續受到歡迎。（最初的設計，目前是紐約現代藝術博物館永久收藏品之一。如今這些深受喜愛的燈具有各種奇特的形狀，包括 Saucer 碟狀、 Cigar 雪茄狀、Ball 球狀等造型。
